Founded in 1977 by libertarian party leader Edward Crane with assistance from Charles Koch and Murray Rothbard, the Institute has established itself as the most prominent libertarian think tank in the country. The groups mission is to increase the understanding of public policies based on the principles of limited government, free markets, individual liberty, and peace. Catos policy positions are staunchly libertarian, and their relationship with conservatives remains tenuous, particularly neoconservatism.
